Step beyond the screen as we uncover the iconic filming locations of beloved films from the 1970s through the 1990s.
Hosted by passionate film historian and pop culture explorer Curtis Templeton, each episode is a cinematic road trip into the heart of Hollywood nostalgia. From abandoned diners to timeless suburban homes and one legendary waterfall, Templeton and his crew revisit the places where movie history was made - capturing the spirit of the original productions and revealing behind-the-scenes stories that even diehard fans might have missed.
Equal parts time capsule, travelogue, and fan tribute, BEYOND THE BACKLOT invites viewers to rediscover movie magic - one legendary location at a time.
THE GOONIES
Templeton and friends embark on a treasure hunt through Astoria, Oregon, where The Goonies was filmed in 1985. Chosen because of how deeply the film’s legacy is woven into the town’s identity - Astoria isn’t simply a backdrop - it’s treated like a character in its own right.

In a standout moment, Templeton interviews director Richard Donner at his Beverly Hills studio, adding a layer of cinematic history and reinforcing why this location was an obvious choice for the series' debut.
BACK TO THE FUTURE
Templeton and friends take viewers on a thrilling quest through Southern California, retracing the iconic filming locations of the beloved 1985 sci‑fi classic. They explore key landmarks - including the Puente Hills Mall parking lot, the real-life Twin Pines Mall, where Marty’s time travel first occurs.
The crew recreates the magic by bringing time travel “back to life”- quite literally - in the exact spot where it all happened over three decades ago.
JURASSIC PARK
Templeton and friends visit Kauai, Hawaii, the iconic the “living, breathing backlot” of Jurassic Park - Isla Nublar brought to life.

Curtis journeys to the heart of dinosaur lore, seeking out the legendary paddock and cascading waterfall featured in the film - evoking the awe and fear that the movie itself conjured.
